🚀 Why would you want to attend a Networking Group 🌐
I don’t know about you, but since the Covid era, there seems to be a lot less personal interaction in the business world, so I think you must consciously go out to create opportunities to meet face to face. Being part of a vibrant networking group can help do that and be a game-changer for your professional journey and your personal sanity.
I attend a regional networking group, and I think if I summarised what I have got from that small investment of time and money (yes, it’s not free), then I would say…
1. Opportunities: I have seen opportunities for partnerships and collaborations that I might not have found elsewhere.
2. Knowledge Sharing: I have learnt from others' experiences and gained insights that have refined my approach, both for now and in the future and I have been able to help others.
3. Support System: I have built relationships with like-minded professionals who motivate and inspire me, to think and act differently, who are detached from my everyday work life and have ‘fresh eyes’.
4. Visibility: I get a chance to think about my personal brand and how I can use my expertise in my industry and in the future.
I believe good networking shouldn’t have pitfalls, but there can be some. Probably the biggest ones I stay aware of are superficial connections, I focus on building genuine relationships rather than merely collecting contacts, and time management I must ensure that my involvement doesn’t compromise my core responsibilities.
I think you also need to be aware of your expectations. I am cautious not to expect immediate returns; I see networking as a long-term investment.
Key measures of success for me are about, am I engaged with the group, or just standing on the sideline? There must be active learning inputs and outcomes. I ask am I helping the others in the group and am I gaining new skills or insights that propel my career forward.
I think it is critical to have a purpose for attending a network group, if you don’t know why you are there, you probably shouldn’t be there! Joining a networking group is more than just attending meetings; it’s about building a supportive community that fuels your growth.
